Tropical storm predicted to send showers to Taiwan

Taipei-The outer band of Tropical Storm Pakhar over the South China Sea could send showers to eastern, southern and southeastern Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said Saturday.

The most affected areas are Hualien, Taitung and Pingtung counties, while other parts of the country are forecast to see cloudy to sunny skies with afternoon thunderstorms, forecasters said.

Daytime highs are expected at 32-35 degrees Celsius, the bureau said, adding that northern Taiwan could even see temperatures above 36 degrees.

As of 11 a.m., Pakhar was located 550 kilometers south-southwest of Eluanbi on Taiwan's southernmost tip, bureau data showed.

The storm was moving in a north-northwesterly direction at 32 kilometers per hour, packing maximum sustained winds of 72 km per hour, with gusts of up to 101 kph, according to the bureau.
