Balmy weather forecast for Taiwan on Sunday

The weather around Taiwan will be slightly cooler on Sunday than the previous day and largely balmy, with occasional showers due to increased moisture in the air, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

With a cloud system from southern China moving eastwards and increasing moisture, northern and eastern parts of Taiwan can expect brief showers on Sunday, while largely cloudy skies are expected to prevail in other regions, the bureau said.

However, residents in the south and mountainous areas of central Taiwan should watch out for short showers in the afternoon, with isolated heavy rainfall, lightning and gusts likely in some of these areas, according to the CWB.

On Sunday, high and low temperatures will be both slightly lower than a day before, with lows of 21-22 degrees Celsius forecast for most areas of Taiwan, and highs of 23-27 degrees for the north and east, and 28-31 degrees for central and southern Taiwan.

The weather will be mostly warm during the day, according to the CWB.

However, a stationary front is expected to linger near Taiwan from Sunday to Saturday and bring rainfall to most of the island, according to Wu Der-rong (???), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University.

The front will be relatively weak at the start, but will still bring isolated showers to areas around the Taiwan on Sunday and Monday, Wu added.

During the two days, residents in central and southern parts particularly should pay attention to isolated thunderstorms with heavy rainfall in the afternoon, Wu said.

From Tuesday to Saturday, with the strengthening of a southwesterly wind system, the stationary front will intensify and usher in the plum rain season, Wu added.

He said people should watch out for potential severe weather caused by the developments of the weather systems, such as lightning, strong winds, sudden downpours and torrential rains that could induce disasters.

On Sunday and Monday next week (May 29-30), the lingering front is forecast to move northeasterly towards the East China Sea, but under the influence of southwesterly winds, central and southern Taiwan can still experience rainfall, while hot weather is forecast for the north and east, Wu noted.
