The 20th Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (TITAS 2016) opened Monday with a focus on environmentally friendly and functional products, according to organizer Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF).
About 400 exhibitors from Taiwan and abroad are displaying their products in 800 booths at the show, making this year's TITAS the biggest in its history, the TTF said.
Among the Taiwanese exhibitors are Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. (??), Formosa Taffeta Co. (??), Nan Ya Plastics Corp. (??), Formosa Plastics Corp. (??), Far Esatern New Century Corp. (???), and Eclat Textile Co. (??), the organizer said.
Sweden-based Polygiene, Germany's Emtec Electronic, Switzerland's Archroma Management, Japan's Toyobo and South Kroea's Ducksan are among the foreign exhibitors at the trade show.
China, Hong Kong and India have also sent delegations to the exhibition to monitor the latest global textile trends, the TTF said.
The organizer said that with the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to take effect on Nov. 4, Taiwan's textile sector is determined to support the global trend toward eco-friendly practices by exhibiting "green" products.
TITAS 2016 visitors will see that the supply chain of Taiwan's textile sector has developed fabrics using recycled materials and get a feel for the depth of the sector's commitment to environmental sustainability, the TTF said.
That's important, the group said, because major overseas buyers in the global textile industry are particularly keen to purchase products that are not harming the environment, creating good opportunities for Taiwanese textile exporters.
Functional fabrics are also being showcased at this year's show, reflecting efforts by Taiwanese textile vendors to work closely with the high-tech sector to introduce "smart" clothing that takes health care, home living, exercise and personal protection into consideration, giving users more choices, according to the TTF.
The group estimated that the market for "smart" clothing could reach US$2.9 billion by 2020.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Tsai Ing-wen (???) said the government will work closely with the local textile industry to develop functional textiles.
She also pledged support for textile vendors to help them build their own brands and urged them to further cooperate with information technology companies to upgrade the textile sector and make it more competitive globally.
Representatives of about 100 international brands from 21 countries are expected to attend the TITAS 2016, with the United States accounting for one-quarter of the foreign brands as the U.S. economy continues its recovery.
The international brands to be represented include the U.S.'s Michael Kors, Woolrich, Exxel Outdoors, and Under Armour, Australia's One Planet and Vigilante, Norway's Stokke, the United Kingdom's Cragshoppers, Germany's Elkline and Ion Bike, Italy's Colmar, Sweden's IC Group-Tiger, and Brazil's Marisa Lojas.
During the three-day trade show, the TTF has arranged more than 1,000 one-on-one meetings between Taiwanese vendors and potential foreign buyers to promote trade growth.
