Bio Taiwan 2018 opens with industry conference

Taipei, Bio Taiwan 2018, one of the largest biotechnology shows in Asia, opened in Taipei on Wednesday with a conference at which industry experts were scheduled to discuss global trends in the sector.

The discussions at the BioBusiness Asia Conference will include topics such as integrating technologies for health care applications, nurturing innovation and startups through creative investment, opportunities and challenges of cross-strait collaboration, and opportunities related to biotechnology in Southeast Asia, according to the event's website.

Speaking at the opening of the three-day conference, Deputy Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin (???) said Taiwan has 118 listed biotechnology companies that have a combined market value of more than NT$900 billion (US$29.4 billion) and an annual output of some NT$100 billion.

At present, Taiwan's biotechnology industry is worthy of recognition as there are 42 new drug products listed at home and abroad, Kung said, mentioning in particular an HIV drug produced by TaiMed Biologics and approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

As part of Bio Taiwan 2018, an exhibition will also be held July 19-22, showcasing biotech products from numerous countries and matching buyers, researchers and manufactures with the 600 exhibitors at 1,400 booths, according to a press release on the event's website.

The participating countries will include China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, the U.S. and Canada, website said.
