Taipei, There was rare snowfall on Yangmingshan on the outskirts of Taipei early Monday as a cold surge continued across Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.
The snowfall was recorded at 6 a.m. Monday at the Anbu weather station when temperatures there fell to 0.3 degrees Celsius, according to CWB forecaster Yen Tseng-hsi (???).
There remains a chance of snowfall at elevations above 1,000 meters in northern Taiwan throughout Monday due to low temperatures, combined with ample moisture brought by a cloud system from south China, he explained.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to stay mostly below 10 degrees in northern Taiwan on Monday, but will reach 13 degrees in central areas and 15-18 degrees in southern Taiwan, Hualien and Taitung in the east, he said.
As the moisture begins to fall Tuesday, the chance of rain around the country and snowfall in mountainous areas will also decrease, he added.
However, the cold weather is forecast to persist, he said, warning that parts of Taiwan will continue to see temperatures below 10 degrees until Wednesday.
