Taiwan reported 18,003 new COVID-19 infections on Friday and 58 new deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s, and all but four had underlying health issues, while 32 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 47 new cases classified as moderate and 44 classified as severe.
There were no reported cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
Meanwhile, the CECC said, the 17,952 new domestic cases (there were also 51 cases classified as originated abroad) reported Friday represented a 11.4-percent drop from a week earlier.
Regional breakdown
New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases Friday, with 2,874, followed by Kaohsiung with 2,428 and Taichung with 2,251.
Taoyuan reported 1,934 cases, Tainan 1,713, Taipei 1,587, Changhua County 960, Pingtung County 624, Hsinchu County 517, Miaoli County 473, Hsinchu City 449, and Yunlin County 434.
Chiayi County had 331 cases, Nantou County 293, Yilan County 264, Keelung 228, Hualien County 198, Chiayi City 194, Taitung County 116, Kinmen 42, Penghu 38 and the Matsu islands four, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,130,231 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,162 classified as imported.
With the 58 deaths reported Friday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,849.
