From Jan. 1, 2017, new motorcycle models will be required to be equipped with daytime running lights that are automatically switched on while in traffic, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said Saturday.
The requirement will be expanded to small-sized vehicles in 2018 and trucks and buses in 2019.
Vehicles already in use will not be required to retrofitted with daytime running lights.
The experiences of some other countries show that using daytime running lights or headlights during daytime can reduce daytime road traffic crashes by at least 5.9 percent, the MOTC said.
The move means that deaths and injuries from road traffic incidents could go down by 26 and 6,668 per year, respectively, the ministry said.
