Government approves Kaohsiung MRT extension

The National Development Council (NDC) approved on Monday an extension to the Kaohsiung MRT to be built in two stages, according to Kaohsiung City government.

In the first stage, the Red Line will be extended to Gangshan railway station and is expected to be completed by 2020. The city government will budget NT$3.06 billion (US$96.41 million) for the 1.46-kilometer section of which NT$1.54 billion will be provided by the central government.

In the second stage, the line will be further extended to Lujhu, terminating at Dahu Station in Hunei District and NT$27.28 billion allocated, including NT$16.15 billion from the central government.

Seven stations will be built along the 11.75 kilometer extension line to Dahu, serving a population of about 350,000 living within 500m of the stations. Construction of the line is scheduled to be finished by 2027, according to the city government.
