Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says he hopes the election of a new WHO head will bring change to the relationship between the WHO and Taiwan.
Chen was speaking Wednesday, a day after the World Health Assembly elected Ethiopian Tedros Adhanom as the new WHO Director-General.
The World Health Assembly is the decision making body of the WHO. After a number of years of attendance as an observer, Taiwan has been unable to attend this year's WHA due to obstruction from China.
There have been concerns that the election of an Ethiopian national as WHO Director-General could spell further exclusion for Taiwan given the close ties between Ethiopia and China. But the health minister said he hopes the new director will introduce a new model to the way the WHO deals with Taiwan.
