Heat wave hits southern Taiwan, 36-degree temperatures expected

A heat alert has been put in place for southern Taiwan, with daytime temperatures expected to hit 36 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said northern and eastern Taiwan are still under the effect of seasonal northeasterly winds, keeping temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius.

Southern Taiwan, however, is shrouded in warm southerly winds that have brought mostly sunny skies, leading the bureau to issue an “orange” heat alert for Tainan City, Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County.

According to the CWB’s three-level heat advisory system, an orange warning points to temperatures reaching 36 degrees for three days in a row, and it said mountainous areas and valleys in particular will experience scorching heat Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Taiwan, daytime temperatures are expected to reach 29 degrees in northern Taiwan, with sporadic showers possible, while the mercury in central Taiwan and some parts of the south could see highs of 32-34 degrees, the CWB forecast.

The bureau said the warm weather in southern Taiwan is expected to continue into Friday before the moisture in the atmosphere increases, bringing rain and slightly cooler temperatures Saturday.

In addition to the heat advisory, the CWB also warned of dense fog in the Kinmen and Matsu islands on Wednesday and Thursday, and urged travelers to keep an eye on their flight schedules if flying on those days.
