The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a heavy rain warning Monday for eight cities and counties in southern and eastern Taiwan.
The areas are Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Chiayi City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Taitung County and Pingtung County, the bureau said.
Due to the influence of a low-pressure system and southwesterly winds, the weather will be rainy around Taiwan until next Monday, with heavy downpours expected in the central and southern regions, according to the CWB.
Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said a Pacific high-pressure system will strengthen next week, ending the week-long rainy spell.
He said the rain brought by the low pressure system and southwesterly winds will help fill up reservoirs around the country, given that Taiwan has experienced only one typhoon so far this season.
