Taipei-HTC Corp. (???), a Taiwan-based smartphone brand, announced Monday that the mid-range HTC One A9s model will carry a price tag of less than NT$5,000 (US$166).
HTC said that the price of NT$4,990 will make the new phone affordable to more consumers, a move that is expected to allow the smartphone brand to show its gratitude to Taiwanese consumers who have shown support for the brand.
After the announcement of the launch of the One A9s model, shares of HTC staged a strong rebound, rising 3.35 percent to close at NT$71.00 and outperforming the local main board, where the weighted index ended up only 0.10 percent at 10,525.98.
Market analysts said that such a pricing strategy is expected to stimulate buying and boost HTC's shipments.
According to HTC, the One A9s, which comes in silver, black and gold, as well as a dual-finish metal body, is scheduled to go on sale in HTC's online store at noon Tuesday.
In addition, five telecom service providers -- Chunghwa Telecom Co. (???), Taiwan Mobile Co. (?????), Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. (??), Asia Pacific Telecom Co. (????) and Taiwan Star Cellular Corp. (????) -- are scheduled to provide a wide range of subscription packages for the One A9s on Sept. 1.
HTC said that the One A9s, with a 5-inch LCD high-definition display, is the latest model in the brand's HTC One series. The screen is protected behind Corning Gorilla Glass, while above the display sits a notification LED.
The One A9s has Near Field Communication (NFC) function to support Android Pay, with digital wallet and mobile payment services provided by Google, HTC said.
Despite the affordable pricing, HTC said, the One A9s is equipped with an ultra-fast fingerprint scanner for security.
The latest model is also equipped with a primary 13 mega-pixel camera and a secondary 5 mega-pixel camera for selfies, while the device has a Zoe Capture function which enables each photo be saved along with a three-second HD video clip. The One A9s has a MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor with battery life of 2300mAh, HTC said.
