Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung police have arrested 10 people and seized NT$623,000 (US$20,250) cash in a raid on a gambling ring that allegedly was running an online operation, the city's Yancheng Precinct said Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided three locations in Kaohsiung City on Friday and arrested the 10 suspects, including a man believed to be the ringleader in the operation of the online gambling business, the precinct said.
Police also seized NT$623,000 in cash, 18 mobile phones, 36 computers, tablets and laptops, five monitors and other electronic devices.
According to police, the online gambling ring was being operated on the scale of a company, with various business divisions, including a control room and promotional and custom services sections.
Clients were being solicited on Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites with offers of the right to place bets once they bought at least NT$1,000 (US$32.5)-worth of online points, with payments made via a third-party channel, police said.
Since the gambling website was established in October 2018, it has attracted more than NT$250 million in bets and the operators have pulled in a profit of around NT$47.7 million, according to police.
