Japan’s representative attends unveiling of rep. office’s new sign

Japanese representative to Taiwan Mikio Numata attended the unveiling of a new sign at Japan's renamed representative office.

The Taiwan-Japan Relations Association is the de facto Japanese embassy in the absence of formal diplomatic ties. Earlier in March, the Cabinet approved the proposal to change the office's name from Interchange Association, Japan. The foreign ministry considers the move a show of the important work the representative does in Taiwan.

During the ceremony, the Japanese representative called this year a milestone in Japan-Taiwan ties with the decision to rename Japan's representative office.

Foreign Minister David Lee called the unveiling ceremony a historic moment. Deputy Legislature President Tsai Chi-chang said the new name is easy to understand and show that Taiwan-Japan friendship can deepen further.
