Library protests its Chinese name change on Google maps

Taipei, National Taiwan Library in New Taipei's Zhonghe District complained Wednesday that Google took too long to change back its Chinese name after it was maliciously altered on Google maps.

Cheng Lai-chang (???), director of the library, told CNA that he lodged a protest with Google management over the unauthorized name change by a third party, after discovering Tuesday morning that the library's name in Chinese had been changed to "China Taipei Library" both on Google maps and its information page.

As of 3:00 p.m., the name "China Taipei Library" in Chinese on Google maps had been removed, but the name shown on the information page was not changed until about 4:30 p.m.

Cheng complained the company took too long to make the changes.

The incident came in the wake of a similar case in September, in which the Chinese language name "National Taipei University on Taipei campus" was altered to "Taipei campus of the China Taiwan Taipei University" on Google maps before being changed back.
