Man catches toddler after third floor fall in Tainan

Tainan,  An electrician in Tainan Wednesday caught a three-year-old girl who fell from the third floor window of an apartment after earlier noticing her sitting on the windowsill.

“All I was thinking was I must catch her,” said Lin Feng-tian (林峰田), who works in a electronics shop on the first floor of the building where the toddler lives.

According to people who witnessed the incident, Lin, his coworker and the shop owner gathered below the window after hearing the girl crying for her father.

As they watched, she turned around and moved away from the window but slipped and fell.

The child suffered no visible injuries and was taken to hospital for a check up, accompanied by her father, according to Tainan City Fire Bureau, which received a report about the incident at 3:56 p.m.

The Fire Bureau, which also notified the police and the city’s Social Affairs Bureau, said its initial investigation found the toddler had been left alone at home.

The father, a single parent, will be interviewed by social workers for possible violations of Article 51 of the Protection of Children and Youth Welfare and Rights Act, which stipulates that children under the age of six should not be left alone, the Social Affairs Bureau said.

Individuals found guilty of such a violation face a fine ranging from NT$3,000 (US$105) to NT$15,000 and are required to take a parenting course of four to 50 hours, according to the act.
