President Tsai congratulates president-elect of Paraguay

Taipei, President Tsai Ing-wen (???) has extended her congratulations to the president- and vice president-elect of Paraguay, which held its presidential election over the weekend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Monday.

In a statement, the MOFA said the congratulatory message was passed on by its embassy in the country on behalf of Tsai and Vice President Chen Chien-jen (???).

Mario Abdo Benitez of the pro-business Colorado Party won Sunday's election with roughly 46.4 percent of the vote with 96 percent of all ballots counted, defeating Efrain Alegre of the center-left Ganar coalition, who had 42.7 percent of the vote.

Paraguay is Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in South America. Last year the two countries celebrated their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

The two countries have maintained close ties over the past 60 years and that the firm friendship will continue, the Foreign Ministry said.
