Qualcomm plans to set up multimedia, AI R&D centers in Taiwan

Taipei, U.S.-based chip designer Qualcomm Inc. plans to establish a multimedia research and development (R&D) center and a mobile artificial intelligence (AI) enablement center in Taiwan, which are expected to begin operations in early 2019, the firm announced Wednesday.

The establishment of the two facilities is part of Qualcomm's commitment to long-term investment in the country and is aimed at speeding up R&D, deepening industrial cooperation and helping Taiwan to cultivate talent and develop its own R&D capability, according to the company.

The multimedia R&D will focus on the research and development of 3D sensing solutions, image compression techniques (including point cloud compression techniques) and computer vision technology, it said.

The mobile AI center will invigorate the development of on-device AI platforms and applications that could help customers take better pictures and videos by transforming their mobile devices into the ultimate personal assistant.

Meanwhile, the two centers will collaborate with Taiwan's best universities and science research institutions to undertake joint projects to help the country's research quality keep in line with global industry trends.

They will also support Taiwan in cultivating and developing talent for innovation and help the country to enhance its own R&D capability, according to Qualcomm.
