Rain likely for New Year’s Eve parties in northern Taiwan

Taipei, A high chance of rain threatens New Year's Eve countdown parties across northern Taiwan due to northeasterly winds, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast Monday.

The chances of rainfall in areas north of Taoyuan, including Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung and Yilan, are between 70 percent to 100 percent, the CWB said.

As of 4 p.m., the CWB had issued heavy rain advisories for New Taipei, Keelung and Taipei, while issuing an extremely heavy rain advisory for Yilan. It said the advisories are likely to remain in place until Tuesday morning.

According to the CWB, heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm in 24 hours or more than 40mm of rainfall in one hour while extremely heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of more than 200mm in 24 hours or more than 100mm in three hours.

The CWB also warned of the potential for falling rocks in mountainous areas due to the wet weather, and it issued strong wind advisories for 18 of Taiwan's 22 cities and counties.

The only places where a strong wind advisory was not in effect were Taipei, Chiayi and Kaohsiung cities and Nantou County.
