Registration starts for 2017 Kinmen Marathon

Registration for the 10th Kinmen Marathon scheduled for Jan. 14, 2017 started on Sunday for Kinmen residents, while online registration will begin on Oct. 24, according to Kinmen County government.

Unlike previous iterations of the annual event, the 2017 marathon will be held over two days instead of one to help boost tourism. In addition, a set number of places will be reserved for Kinmen residents, according to the county government.

An 11.2-kilometer race and 5-km fun run will be held on Jan. 14, while the 42.195-km marathon and 21.095-km half marathon will be staged the next day, the county government said.

A total of 6,000 places will be available in the marathon, half marathon and 11.2 km races and another 16,000 in the fun run.

Meanwhile, an additional 1,000 places will be reserved for Kinmen residents, including 200 in the marathon, 600 in the half marathon and 200 in the 11.2-km race, the county government added.

To promote the event, Kinmen Deputy County Magistrate Wu Cheng-tien (???) earlier this year led a delegation from the county government to Xiamen in southeast China where he invited several companies to attend the 2017 marathon, including the branches of Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc. in Xiamen and Xiamen C and D Corp. Ltd, according to the county government.

Wu said that Kinmen's beautiful scenery, quality Kaoliang liquor and friendly residents make it an excellent place to hold a marathon.

Xiamen Municipal Sports Bureau deputy head Wu Mingxian (???), who participated in the 2016 marathon in February, described the event as being like a carnival and a great success, according to the county government.
