Second tropical storm of year forms, will not impact Taiwan

Taipei--A depression located in the South China Sea developed into a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon, but will not impact Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Tropical Storm Merbok, the second in this year's typhoon season, is moving in a north-northwest direction at 21 kilometers per hour and is expected to make landfall in southern China's Guangdong Province, according to the bureau.

Although Merbok is unlikely to impact Taiwan, its periphery is forecast to bring occasional showers to central and southern Taiwan on Monday and Tuesday, the bureau said.
