Surface parcel postage rates to 14 countries will go up by between 19 percent and 130 percent starting from next year, the Chunghwa Post Co. announced Tuesday.
The rates, which have remained unchanged for 14 years, will be raised from Jan. 1, 2017, Chunghwa Post said.
In consideration of rising operating costs, it has decided to increase surface parcel rates to 14 countries -- mainland China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands and South Africa.
In view of the fact that after the hikes, surface parcel postage to South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau will be nearly the same or even higher than air postage, Chunghwa Post has decided to stop operating to those destinations altogether.
