Taiwan able to evacuate nationals from S Korea: Officials

Defense officials say Taiwan is prepared to evacuate its nationals from South Korea if the need arises. There are around 20,000 Taiwanese nationals currently in the country.

With tensions on the Korean peninsula running high, DPP lawmaker Liu Shyh-Fang asked commanders Thursday whether the military has plans in place for getting these nationals to safety in the event of an emergency.

Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan said ships and aircraft are available for an evacuation. Feng said an evacuation would take place if other countries decided to evacuate their nationals or if Taiwanese nationals were in need of assistance. He said he is confident in the military's ability to get Taiwanese civilians to safety.

Navy Chief of Staff Lee Chung-hsiao said the navy has plans in place to return civilians to Taiwan or take them to another safe place. Meanwhile, Air Force Chief of Staff Fan Ta-wei said the air force can have its planes in the air in an hour if given an order to evacuate Taiwanese nationals.
