The head of the foreign ministry's Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, Chang Shu-ling, says she hopes the two countries will continue to be close. Chang was speaking Tuesday as this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and China.
Relations between Tokyo and Beijing had been tense in the past few years. However, Chang said she believes that the Japanese people see the need for an improvement in the relationship. Chang said Taiwan's relations with Japan will not suffer if ties between Japan and China improve.
"No matter how other countries maintain their relations with Japan, they can all help develop their ties with Taiwan as well. We believe likewise in the case of the Japanese government. No matter how they maintain close ties with other countries, [we trust] that they can also continue to develop friendly ties with Taiwan," said Chang.
