Taiwan mourns passing of ex-U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

President Tsai Ing-wen (???) on Thursday mourned the passing of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who died at the age of 84.

“My condolences to the family of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the people of the United States,” Tsai tweeted.

“With her passing, the U.S. and the world have lost a true champion of democracy who inspired so many people with her leadership,” she added.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) also issued a statement expressing its condolences over the death of the former U.S. secretary of state.

Albright had dedicated her life to promoting the values of democracy, peace, and human rights around the world, and for that, she commanded deep respect, MOFA said.

She once served as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations during the Clinton administration before becoming the first female secretary of state in U.S. history, MOFA said.

Following her term as secretary of state, Albright then took on the role as chairperson of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs where she continued to speak out for the promotion of democracy, the foreign ministry said.

MOFA added that she had also been a friend of Taiwan, once remarking that the U.S. should stick to the Taiwan Relations Act, which guides its relations with Taiwan.

That comment was made on Feb. 28, 2019, during a meeting of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs reviewing the foreign policy of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Albright’s family in a statement, the former U.S. secretary of state died of cancer on Wednesday.
