Taiwan is looking to deepen cooperation with the United States in the field of mobile network infrastructure to drive next-generation digital transformation, National Development Council (NDC) Minister Kung Ming-hsin (???) said Wednesday during a visit to Silicon Valley.
It is hoped the trip will facilitate further collaboration between Taiwan and the U.S. on building 5G Open RAN (open radio access networks), said Kung, referring to a mobile network system that uses cellular radio connections to link individual devices to other parts of a network critical to 5G development.
The collaboration will help industries on both sides to enhance 5G and beyond 5G capabilities for vertical applications and artificial intelligence of things (AIoT), Kung said at a roundtable discussion held in San Francisco, according to a press release by the NDC Thursday.
Kung heads a 41-member “NextGen Telecom Delegation” attending the SelectUSA Investment Summit, an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce that focuses on facilitating job-creating investment in the U.S., to be held in Maryland from June 26 to 29.
On the first leg of the delegation’s 11-day visit, members visited Alphabet Inc.’s Google and six start-up companies in the fields of blockchain, advanced composite materials, 3D imaging, wireless power, and antivirus software, the NDC said.
Kung also visited Draper University, a training center for entrepreneurs, funded by American venture capital investor Tim Draper who has applied for an employment gold card in Taiwan, a document that combines visa, work and residency permits to attract foreign professionals, the NDC said.
While welcoming Draper to seek opportunities in Taiwan, Kung presented him with the employment gold card which Draper said he would use to visit the country in November, according to the NDC.
Meanwhile, Kung met with Christine Tsai (????), CEO and founding partner of 500 Startups and its manager partner Tony Wang (???), to explore opportunities for cooperation between the venture capital firm and National Development Fund, Taiwan’s sovereign wealth fund managed by the NDC.
The delegation is scheduled to visit Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. in Seattle on Thursday before heading to Washington, D.C., the NDC said.
