Taiwan to strengthen trade cooperation with U.S.: president

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said on Wednesday that Taiwan will continue to strengthen trade and economic cooperation following the victory of Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election.

Tsai stressed that the government would continue its efforts to strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations with the United States so as to foster a long-term stable relationship.

She noted that Taiwan and the U.S. have long-standing friendly relations, share common interests and values.

“Relations between Taiwan and the United States will continue to deepen,” Tsai said, while addressing a meeting of the Chinese National Federation of Industries in Taipei.

On the possibility of short-term volatility in the financial markets, Tsai said she has asked the Executive Yuan to take all necessary measures.

The president said earlier “we have every confidence in the future of Taiwan-U.S. relations,” adding that Taipei would continue to deepen cooperation with the United States in various areas, including trade and regional security, based on the solid foundation the two sides have built.

“We believe that our relationship with the United States is a long, trusting one and while there may be some uncertainty in the future, we are confident we can ensure stability in bilateral relations and the overall situation in the Asia-Pacific.”
