Taiwan women lose 2-0 to China at East Asian Football Championship

Taiwan’s women’s national soccer team lost 2-0 to China in their opening game at the 2022 East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship in Japan Wednesday.

Taiwan was on the back foot from the off at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture, with China’s 21-year-old striker Zhang Linyan (???) breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute.

China doubled their lead just 10 minutes later after Taiwan defender Su Sin-yun (???) accidentally turned the ball into her own net.

China continued to pepper the Taiwan goal for much of the rest of the game, with Taiwan’s only real chance coming in the 87th minute when Chen Yen-ping (???) hit the bar with an attempt from just outside the box.

The last time Taiwan’s women’s national soccer team played against China was at the opening match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 in India on Jan. 20, when China, who later went on to win the title, defeated Taiwan 4-0.

After Wednesday’s defeat, Taiwan head coach Yen Shih-kai (???) said that his side would “still be preparing for the next two games according to what we have been practicing.”

Taiwan will face tournament hosts Japan on Saturday, and South Korea on Tuesday at Kashima Soccer Stadium in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.

The 2022 edition of the women’s EAFF E-1 Football Championship kicked off Tuesday, and features teams Taiwan, China, Japan, and South Korea competing in a single round-robin format from July 18-27.
