Bangkok, Thai police on Monday discovered in Bangkok that a man caught arriving from Cambodia with a fake Republic of China (ROC) passport was a Taiwanese economic crime fugitive, according to Thai Immigration Police Bureau.
After running his fingerprints through databases in coordination with Taiwan's authorities stationed in Bangkok, the identity of Chin Hsiang-yu (???) was confirmed and he was detained by Thai police at 3:30 p.m. at Suvarnabhumi Airport on suspicion of holding a fake ROC passport.
The founder of Dingli Group, Chin jumped bail and fled to China in 2016 after Taiwan's High Court in 2015 handed down a 11-year sentence to him for being involved in an investment scam that earned him NT$13.6 billion (US$437.78 million). The ruling was upheld by Taiwan's Supreme Court last year.
On Tuesday, Chin will be referred to a court in Samut Prakan Province, in central Thailand for further investigation into the offense of using a fake passport, Thai police said.
It was unclear whether he will be extradited to Taiwan soon.
