Taiwan’s National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) will perform in Vancouver, Canada, on Dec. 9 and Orange County, California on Dec. 12 in the orchestra’s first tour of North America.
The repertoire will include Taiwanese composer Tyzen Hsiao’s (蕭泰然, 1938-2015) violin concerto in D major, performed by violinist Cho-Liang Lin (林昭亮) and Russian composer Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
Lu Shao-chia (呂紹嘉), music director of the NSO, will also lead the orchestra in its world premiere of the “Last Mile,” a piece that contains Taiwanese indigenous people related themes by young composer Lee Chun-wei (李俊緯).
The concerts will be held at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 9 and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa at 8 p.m. on Dec. 12.
