Tropical Depression Near Taiwan Predicted to Strengthen but Pose No Threat to Island

Manila: A tropical depression located to the east of Taiwan is anticipated to intensify into a tropical storm by noon on Tuesday. However, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced on Monday that the storm is not expected to impact the island directly.

According to Focus Taiwan, the center of the depression was positioned 550 kilometers east of Taitung County as of 8 a.m. and is advancing north-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng stated that the depression emerged earlier in the day and could upgrade to a tropical storm by Tuesday morning. Nevertheless, its current trajectory suggests it will have only a minimal effect on Taiwan.

Recent days in Taiwan have been marked by weak wind conditions, with afternoon thunderstorms anticipated to become more frequent leading up to Wednesday. However, these conditions are expected to subside over the subsequent two days, Liu noted.

Additionally, a separate low-pressure system near Hainan Island, China, is projected to move toward the Indochina Peninsula. While it may develop into a tropical depression, it is unlikely to evolve into a tropical storm, Liu explained. Meanwhile, the CWA continues to monitor cloud systems southeast of Guam for any potential developments in the coming days.
