Tsai bestows honor on Paraguayan president

Taipei, President Tsai Ing-wen (???) conferred President Mario Abdo Benitez of Paraguay the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon on Monday in recognition of his contributions to the development of relations between the two countries.

Speaking at the ceremony prior to a state banquet, Tsai thanked Benitez for his firm support for Taiwan's bid to join international organizations.

In her speech, she also mentioned that his father, Mario Abdo Benitez Sr., served as private secretary to former Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner, who helped forge formal ties between the two countries 61 years ago.

The recognition symbolizes the strong relationship between the two countries, which has been passed down from one generation to another, Tsai said.

The Order of Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon is the top rank of the nine-rank civilian order of the Republic of China (Taiwan) granted to nationals and foreign nationals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the nation.

The Paraguayan president is on a six-day state visit in Taiwan, during which he will attend the Double Ten National Day celebrations on Oct. 10.

Taiwan and Paraguay have maintained diplomatic ties since 1957.
