Wan-an drill starts at 1:30 p.m. Monday in northern Taiwan

Taipei, The annual Wan-an air raid drill will be held between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in northern Taiwan on Monday.

During the 30-minute period, an evacuation procedure will be carried out in the northern Taiwan areas of Yilan County, Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City and Hsinchu County.

During the drill, pedestrians and vehicles in outdoor areas will be required to follow the instructions of police, military, and evacuation personnel to seek shelter and vacate the roads.

People indoors will be expected to close their windows and doors, turn off their electricity and gas and comply with other relevant regulations under the Civil Defense Act.

Failure to observe the evacuation regulations and other related procedures will result in a fine of between NT$30,000 (US$1,000) and NT$150,000.

Traffic on highways, in airports and on mass rapid transit, railway and the high speed railway systems will operate normally during the 30-minute period. Passengers, however, will not be permitted to exit those systems and will be given instructions by police and evacuation personnel.

The drill will be conducted in southern Taiwan and the offshore county of Kinmen on Tuesday and in eastern Taiwan and Matsu Island on Wednesday.
