A wheel loosened and fell off a Tzu Chiang express train in Xinying in Tainan City on Monday, prompting the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) to launch a general inspection of the same type of trains.
TRA said the conductor of Train 122 bound for Keelung from Chaozhou heard an unusual sound as his train entered Xinying Station at 1:02 p.m. He found that a wheel had slipped off the train, causing a 55-minute delay.
Wheels on Tzu Chiang trains usually last four years and are routinely changed within that time span. The wheel that failed had been in service for only two years, and TRA experts said the problem may have been caused by excessive heat.
