Work starts on Taipei MRT Xinyi Line extension

Construction work on an extension of Taipei Metro system's Xinyi Line started on Saturday and is expected to take until 2022 to complete, according to system operator Taipei Rapid Transit Corp (TRTC).

The extension will run underground from the current terminus, Xiangshan Station, eastward along Xinyi Road Section 6th, Fude Street and Zhongpo South Road, before terminating at Yucheng Park, the company said.

The 1.42 km track will terminate at a three-level underground station with an island platform, which will have three entrances/exits to a planned Xinyi District administration office and two entrances/exits in Guang-Ci Care Park, TRTC added.

The project is expected to increase transport capacity on the Xinyi Line and the coverage provided by the MRT system, which currently operates five lines.

Xinyi line, which runs underground from Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Station along Xinyi Road to the Xinyi Planning District, is 6.4km in length and has seven underground stations, it began service in November 2013.
