Ang Lee to Receive DGA Lifetime Achievement Award

Taipei: Taiwanese American filmmaker Ang Lee, known for his diverse body of work and multiple accolades, has been selected to receive the Directors Guild of America's (DGA) 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award. This honor will be bestowed upon him at the 77th Annual DGA Awards on February 8, 2025, recognizing his significant contributions to cinema and motion picture direction. According to Focus Taiwan, the DGA, an 88-year-old organization, announced Lee's selection, highlighting his exceptional ability to navigate various genres in filmmaking while maintaining a high standard of cinematic excellence. DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter praised Lee as a "master filmmaker" whose work spans period dramas, comedies, adventures, westerns, superhero films, and martial arts, all marked by a fearless approach to new challenges and a refusal to repeat himself. Lee, 70, has won two Academy Awards for Best Director, with credits for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Life of Pi," as well as two Golden Globe Best Director awards for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Brokeback Mountain." In acknowledging Lee's latest accolade, Glatter noted that his films encourage audiences to delve into complex characters that resonate long after viewing. Expressing his gratitude, Lee stated in the DGA announcement that receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award is a significant milestone, allowing him to reflect on his work's impact within the filmmaking community. Born in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, in 1954, Lee completed his education at National Taiwan College of Arts before advancing his studies in the United States. While pursuing a Master's Degree in Film Production at New York University, Lee served as an assistant director for a student film by Spike Lee, the previous recipient of the DGA's Lifetime Achievement Award. Lee's illustrious career has been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Fellowship from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2021 and the Praemium Imperiale, a global arts prize awarded by the Jap an Art Association, making him the first Taiwanese recipient of this honor.
