Bangkok:Belize Prime Minister John Briceño has expressed his desire for stronger ties with Taiwan, focusing on investment, technology exchanges, and people-to-people connections. He believes these collaborations will aid in the development of Belize.
According to Focus Taiwan, Briceño highlighted the potential for cooperation in areas such as shrimp farming technology and practical technology exchanges during an interview in Bangkok. He emphasized that Belize's young population, which is quick to learn, provides an advantage for technology partnerships.
Briceño also pointed out that initial cooperation with Taiwan in artificial intelligence could focus on practical solutions that meet Belize's specific needs. People-to-people exchanges are seen as valuable, with Taiwanese students currently working in various fields in Belize.
The Prime Minister is attending the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok. He stressed the need for international financial institutions to consider the limited resources of small countries like Belize, citing a World Bank project that nearly missed its deadline due to lengthy procedures.
Briceño also addressed challenges such as climate change and providing basic infrastructure to Belize's dispersed population. He reaffirmed Belize's support for Taiwan, criticizing China's recent sanctions against a Belizean official and asserting Belize's right to maintain its international relations independently.
