Black Tide Island Leads 60th Golden Bell Awards with Record Nominations

Taipei: Dramas are in the spotlight on the second night of the Golden Bell Awards, often described as Taiwan’s answer to the Emmys. Golden Bell winner Bowie Tsang is the host for Saturday’s proceedings at the Taipei Music Center.

According to Focus Taiwan, “Black Tide Island”, a period drama following the lives of political prisoners in 1950s Taiwan, leads the nominations at the 60th edition of the awards with 16 nods. Tied for second with 15 nominations are “Born for the Spotlight”, an exposition on struggles of fame facing six new actresses, and “The Outlaw Doctor”, which tells the story of a Vietnamese doctor treating undocumented workers in Taiwan.

Three actresses from “Born for the Spotlight” — Cheryl Yang, Suri Lin, and Hsieh Ying-xuan — have been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Television Series. Other nominees include Alice Ko for “I Am Married . But!”, and Ning Chang for “The Outlaw Doctor.”

The event can be streamed live on the Golden Bell Awards’ official website and YouTube, as well as on the Ministry of Culture’s Facebook page.
