China Airlines Eases Rules Allowing Cabin Crew to Wear Framed Glasses

Taipei: China Airlines (CAL), a major Taiwanese international carrier, has announced a new policy allowing cabin crew to wear framed glasses while on duty.

According to Focus Taiwan, this change, effective from Thursday, aims to enhance comfort for crew members, particularly on long-haul flights across numerous time zones.

The airline specified that approved glasses must be simple in design, single-colored, and can include metal or rimless frames with clear lenses. To ensure operational effectiveness, crew members are required to carry a spare pair of glasses. This marks a departure from the previous rule, which only permitted contact lenses for nearsighted crew members, primarily for aesthetic purposes.

CAL is also considering a policy change to allow cabin crew to wear casual athletic shoes during flights. This potential modification aims to reduce foot strain from prolonged periods of standing and walking, further improving comfort for the cabin crew.

In a related development, Tigerair Taiwan announced its intention to permit cabin crew to wear glasses on duty to enhance comfort, although it has not specified when this change will be implemented. Additionally, Tigerair Taiwan is preparing to introduce a new uniform project, set to be revealed with the arrival of its A321neo fleet.

Meanwhile, EVA Airways (EVA Air), another Taiwanese carrier, already permits its cabin crew to wear framed glasses if contact lenses are unsuitable due to eye conditions. Since May 1, 2023, EVA Air has also allowed its cabin crew to select comfortable shoes tailored to their needs, provided the heel height is at least 2.5 centimeters.
