Taipei: Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) is set to travel to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, leading a delegation of lawmakers to engage in discussions on critical issues, including U.S. tariffs.
According to Focus Taiwan, Chiang will be accompanied by KMT lawmakers Chang Chih-lun and Huang Chien-hao, as well as Lin Yi-chun of the Taiwan People’s Party. Additional legislators from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, including Wang Ting-yu, Chiu Yi-ying, and Ngalim Tiunn, will join the delegation after their departure on Monday.
Chiang’s office issued a statement indicating that he has spent over 20 days meeting with representatives from various industries in Taiwan to address their concerns about U.S. tariffs, geopolitical risks, and investment opportunities. Chiang aims to support the government’s efforts in tariff negotiations and explore broader opportunities for Taiwan-U.S. cooperation beyond just TSMC and semiconductors.
During their visit to Washington, the legislative delegation will conduct meetings with U.S. lawmakers, think tanks, companies, and government agencies. Their agenda includes advocating for the passage of a U.S.-Taiwan double taxation relief bill, ensuring the timely delivery of U.S. arms purchased by Taiwan, and promoting wider defense cooperation between Taiwan and the United States.
The lawmakers participating in the delegation are members of either the Taiwan-U.S. parliamentary friendship group or the Legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, as stated in the press release.
