DPP Lawmaker Su Chiao-hui to Seek Support for New Taipei Mayoral Bid

New taipei: Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Su Chiao-hui has announced her intention to garner the support of New Taipei residents following her selection by the party’s nominations panel as its mayoral candidate for the city. Speaking at the Legislative Yuan, Su emphasized her commitment to campaigning with a positive and proactive attitude to earn the trust and backing of the city’s populace.

According to Focus Taiwan, Su highlighted her dedication to strengthening Taiwan’s democracy and advancing the development of New Taipei as her primary goals since the beginning of her campaign for the nomination. These objectives, she stated, will remain at the forefront of her efforts. When questioned about her potential rivals, including Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan, who is favored by the Kuomintang (KMT), Su acknowledged the presence of several strong candidates vying for the position, each with distinct strengths.

Su expressed confidence in her ideas for New Taipei, claiming they are contemporary and her ability to implement them is robust. Addressing concerns over public dissatisfaction with the city’s annual Christmasland event, she noted the worries of Banqiao District residents about traffic congestion during the festivities. Su proposed that, if elected, her administration would offer a fresh approach with new ideas and execution.

She intends to reevaluate the Christmasland event by incorporating innovative concepts that consider local economic benefits, transportation, and the event’s purpose. Her aim is to create a celebration that resonates with residents and attracts visitors. Su, the daughter of former Premier Su Tseng-chang, has represented a New Taipei-based district in the Legislature since 2016. Her selection as the DPP candidate for New Taipei mayor in the 2026 elections awaits final approval from the party’s Central Executive Committee.
