EVA Air President Becomes First Taiwanese Member of IATA Board

Taipei: Sun Chia-ming, president of Taiwan-based international carrier EVA Airways, has become the first Taiwanese member of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) board of directors, EVA Air announced on Monday. Sun was elected as one of the board members during IATA's 82nd Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday.

According to Focus Taiwan, turnover its board of directors includes the CEOs of 31 carriers and IATA Director-General Willie Walsh. EVA Air highlighted that Sun's election marks a significant milestone, showcasing the airline's recognition by its global peers for its commitment to international civilian aviation and its established position in the industry. Walsh noted that IATA is pleased to welcome Sun to the board and anticipates leveraging his experience in passenger and cargo services to shape IATA's policy directions and aviation development strategies.

Sun began his career with the Evergreen Group in 1986 and joined EVA Air in 1991, becoming the airline's president in 2018. IATA's board of directors, serving as the organization's highest executive body, is responsible for guiding the strategic direction and approving major policies and governance structures.

The board comprises four committees: the Governance and Performance Committee, the Industry Strategy and Policy Committee, the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee, and the Membership Committee. EVA Air explained that IATA is a nongovernmental international organization consisting of airlines worldwide. Since its establishment in 1945, the group has become a key player in the global aviation industry.

IATA is headquartered in Montreal, Canada, with an executive office in Geneva, Switzerland. It boasts more than 360 airline members, representing over 80 percent of global air traffic, EVA Air stated.
