Five Taiwanese Artists Invited to Join Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Los angeles: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 534 film professionals worldwide, including five notable Taiwanese artists. This announcement highlights the global reach and diversity the Academy aims to foster within its ranks.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiwanese invitees are producer Peggy Chiao, director Mong-Hong Chung, composer Wei San Hsu, producer Vincent Wang, and editor Yang-Hua Hu. This year's new members come from 19 branches and represent 60 countries and regions. Notably, 55 percent are from outside the United States, 41 percent are women, and 45 percent are from underrepresented communities in the film industry.

Chiao, recognized as the "godmother of Taiwan New Cinema," has an extensive career as a producer and scholar. Her work includes producing credits for "Blue Gate Crossing" and "Empire of Silver." Chung, an accomplished director, is known for "A Sun," which was Taiwan's official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Oscars. He is a multiple Golden Horse Award winner and recently showcased his work in a solo retrospective at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles.

Hsu, a composer based in Los Angeles, is noted for scoring the documentary "Invisible Nation." Meanwhile, Hu has made contributions across film, theater, and music videos, and was honored with the Robert Altman Award at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards for his work on the film "Mass."
