New taipei: A medical doctor who previously served as president of Fu Jen Catholic University in New Taipei was stabbed and lightly injured by a 30-year-old assailant at a university-affiliated hospital Tuesday, authorities said.
According to Focus Taiwan, police sources reported that Chiang Han-sun, a urologist, was seeing patients at Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital at around 2 p.m. when the stabbing occurred. Upon entering Chiang's office, the 30-year-old suspect, surnamed Tseng, took out a utility knife and slashed Chiang on his right wrist and the left side of his stomach, before being tackled and restrained by hospital security.
The New Taipei Police Department's Xinzhuang Precinct confirmed that it had taken Tseng into custody and, after questioning, would turn him over to prosecutors on suspicion of causing bodily harm and violations of the Medical Care Act. The hospital, meanwhile, said in a statement that its medical staff had quickly come to the aid of Chiang, whose injuries were not life-threatening. It also pledged to fully comply with the police investigation and condemned the act of violence against a medical professional.
Police have yet to confirm Tseng's motive. Local media, however, citing anonymous police sources, reported that Tseng was a Fu Jen University dropout who had been accused, but ultimately cleared, of embezzling school funds while Chiang was serving as university president.
