Former Oil Executive Receives Additional Sentence for Ankle Monitor Tampering

Kaohsiung:A former oil executive has been sentenced to an additional 32 months in prison for destroying his electronic ankle monitor while in hiding, after previously being sentenced to 25 years for corruption-related offenses. The Ciaotou District Court handed down the verdict on October 7 against Hsu Han, the former chief of CPC Corp.'s refinery division in Kaohsiung's Nanzih District.

According to Focus Taiwan, Hsu left his Kaohsiung home on March 19, equipped with more than NT$200,000 in cash, clothes, and an angle grinder, which he used to cut off his ankle monitor near Wanluan Township in Pingtung County. A male accomplice, identified by the surname Lin, later picked Hsu up by car. Together, they disposed of the ankle monitor and a court-issued mobile phone in a river before retreating to a rural bed-and-breakfast in Taitung County, where they were eventually found by authorities on March 24.

The court revealed that a female accomplice, also surnamed Lin, assisted in planning the escape by scouting potential routes. Despite Hsu's admission to tampering with the monitor, he received a separate prison sentence based on the Criminal Code.

Before this incident, Hsu had been sentenced on March 23 to 25 years for accepting NT$16.86 million in bribes and possessing unexplained assets totaling NT$4.73 million. He failed to appear in court on that date, prompting an immediate search by law enforcement.

The court also sentenced the female accomplice to six months, convertible to a fine, while the male accomplice received a 16-month prison sentence, both of which are subject to appeal.
