Heart Over Height: Isaiah Thomas’s Remarkable NBA Journey

Taipei: "I don't remember the moment, but ever since I was a kid, that's the first thing I loved," said Isaiah Thomas, a two-time NBA All-Star, reflecting on his enduring love for basketball. According to Focus Taiwan, Thomas's journey in the NBA was defined by his battle against the limitations of his stature in a sport where height is often a key factor. Standing at 175 centimeters (5 feet 9 inches), Thomas is only slightly taller than the average Taiwanese male, while the average height of NBA players during his career hovered around 200 cm. Despite these challenges, Thomas carved out an impressive 13-season career in the league, a feat that stands in contrast to the average NBA career length of less than five years. During an interview with CNA at the NBA Rising Stars Invitational in New Taipei, where he was coaching young Taiwanese players, Thomas described his career as an "everyday battle." He emphasized the need for heart and belief in oneself, especially for undersized players in a game that isn't traditionally for "small men." Thomas shared that his journey to stardom was fueled by constant preparation, even during periods when he wasn't playing. "That's what I've done my whole life," he remarked, underscoring the importance of staying ready and maintaining a positive mindset. Drafted last in the 2011 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, Thomas initially felt disappointment but viewed being selected as the realization of a dream. His perseverance and dedication led to significant improvements in his game, particularly during his tenure with the Boston Celtics from 2015 to 2017, where he earned back-to-back NBA All-Star selections and was nicknamed "Mr. 4th Quarter." Thomas's career, however, faced hurdles due to a hip injury sustained during the 2017 playoffs, which he later blamed partly on inadequate medical disclosure by his team. Despite the decline that followed, Thomas expressed gratitude for his basketball journey, acknowledging its influence on his personal growth and international experience s. In recent years, Taiwan has seen an influx of former NBA players, and although talks with the now-defunct Taichung Suns did not result in a move, Thomas expressed openness to opportunities to play in Taiwan in the future.
