Heat Warning Issued for Central and Southern Taiwan

Taipei:Some regions in central and southern Taiwan are facing a heat warning, with the Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasting daytime temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius on Monday. The alert follows the anticipated dissipation of cloud cover in the area.

According to Focus Taiwan, the CWA has issued a "yellow" heat alert for Taichung in central Taiwan, and for Tainan and Pingtung County in the south. Temperatures in these locations are expected to reach 36 degrees around noon, with some inland areas potentially experiencing even higher temperatures.

Western Taiwan can expect temperatures between 32 and 34 degrees, while eastern Taiwan will see slightly cooler highs between 31 and 32 degrees. Despite the high daytime temperatures, the CWA predicts a sharp drop at night, with temperatures falling to between 22 and 25 degrees across Taiwan.

In addition to the heat warning, Typhoon Champi could impact Taiwan later this week. As of 8 a.m. Monday, the typhoon was positioned about 2,120 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan, advancing west-northwest at 21 kilometers per hour. The CWA noted the uncertainty in the typhoon’s trajectory, suggesting it might either veer northward, bypassing Taiwan, or continue on a direct path.

On Sunday, the CWA indicated the possibility of issuing a sea warning by Wednesday night, followed by a land warning on Thursday. Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong emphasized the need for public vigilance, as a direct hit cannot be ruled out. Wu also cautioned about the potential for heavy rain and strong winds as the typhoon approaches.
