Taipei: Japan and Taiwan both face a growing Chinese military threat and should continue to strengthen their defensive capabilities to safeguard their democratic systems, visiting China-born Japanese lawmaker Hei Seki said Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Seki, who is a member of the Japan Innovation Party in the House of Councillors, emphasized the importance of the relationship between Japan and Taiwan during a seminar in Taipei. He cited an old Chinese saying, 'If the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold,' to illustrate the close ties between the two nations in the face of China's expansionism. This metaphor suggests that if one nation is attacked by Beijing, the other would also face immediate danger.
Seki asserted that as long as the Chinese Communist Party regime persists, it will never abandon its ambitions to invade both Taiwan and Japan. In response to this persistent threat, both countries have pledged to significantly increase their defense spending, as Seki believes that peace can only be achieved through strength.
Furthermore, Seki urged Japan, Taiwan, and the United States to enhance their security alliance to effectively deter any potential Chinese aggression. This call for a stronger trilateral security cooperation underscores the urgency and gravity of the situation faced by both Japan and Taiwan in maintaining regional stability.
