Beijing: The Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are scheduled to hold a think tank exchange from February 2 to 4. Deputy KMT Chairman Hsiao Hsu-tsen is set to lead a delegation to Beijing for the event, as confirmed by KMT sources on Tuesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, National Policy Foundation Deputy Chairman Lee Hong-yuan is also expected to participate in the exchange. Hsiao is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday to provide further details on the visit. Initial speculation suggested the possibility of reviving the KMT-CCP forum in Beijing from January 27 to 29 after a nine-year hiatus. However, KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun has clarified that the upcoming event will be the first think tank exchange rather than a two-party forum.
KMT insiders have indicated that the exchange will focus on non-political topics such as artificial intelligence, disaster prevention, and low-carbon and sustainable industrial development. This approach is intended to minimize sensitivity around the discussions. Additionally, Cheng has shown interest in visiting China in the first half of the year, which has led to speculation about a potential meeting with CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping.
Party sources noted that it remains uncertain whether Hsiao's visit will address Cheng's prospective trip to China or potential discussions between the two party leaders.
