Taichung: Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) revealed his intention to seek the party’s nomination for the 2026 Taichung mayoral race. Chiang disclosed his plans during a Christmas concert in Fengyuan, Taichung, which is both his legislative constituency and hometown.
According to Focus Taiwan, the 53-year-old legislator acknowledged the increasing discussions surrounding Taiwan’s 2026 elections and expressed his desire not to let down the public who are urging him to run. As a dedicated KMT member, Chiang pledged to do everything within his power to secure the party’s nomination and pursue his vision for Greater Taichung.
Chiang has been serving as a member of the Legislative Yuan since 2012 and held the position of KMT Chairman from March 2020 to October 2021. With the current KMT mayor of Taichung, Lu Shiow-yen, completing her second term, the mayoral seat will be open for the upcoming election set for November 28, 2026.
Within the KMT, Legislator Yang Chiung-ying has also shown interest in the party’s nomination for the mayoral race. Meanwhile, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has already nominated Legislator Ho Hsin-chun as its candidate, a decision made in October.
